Harry Glickman Winners
The Oregon Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, located at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, accepts applications annually for the Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Award. This honor is awarded to two Jewish scholar athletes who live in Oregon, and are a junior or senior in high school. Applicants are judged on academic and athletic achievements as well as his or her commitment to community service. A letter of recommendation is required from a coach, teacher or mentor. Winners receive the Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Award at the MJCC’s Community Celebration, along with public recognition at the MJCC and a monetary award.
Lia is a multi-sport athlete who plays softball, soccer, and basketball. In 2018, she played for the Lake Oswego Girls Softball Little League team, representing Oregon at the Little League Softball World Series where the team achieved a commendable 4th place finish. Lia has actively participated in club softball with teams like the Lake Oswego Renegades and Oregon Rebels, achieving notable accomplishments such as winning the 16B Oregon State Championship and ranking among the top five players at the 16B Nafa Nationals.
Her dedication extends beyond the softball field, having played competitive youth basketball and participated in both JV and Varsity soccer at Lake Oswego High School, earning All-League recognition in her senior year. Lia’s commitment extends beyond athletics. She is a member of the National Honors Society and the National Art Honors Society, demonstrating a focus on academic achievement and artistic expression. Her volunteer work with BBYO, participation in community service projects, and service as an umpire for the Lake Oswego Girls Softball Little League, all highlight a commitment to giving back to the community and fostering a positive impact on others.
Starting at the age of 10, Enzo played premier level soccer for United PDX, contributing to his President’s Cup victory. At McDaniel High School, he was a captain on the varsity soccer team, earning All-Conference honors and a PIL all-star honorable mention. Enzo’s leadership helped the team reach the OSAA state championship quarterfinals for the first time in school history. He also participated in powder-puff volleyball and played little league baseball.
Beyond athletics, Enzo is an avid skier and actively involved in his community. He served as a Regional Board Member (VP of Jewish Education and Religious Activities) for BBYO, organizing food and blanket drives for local homeless shelters. He also served as a Regional BBYO delegate and worked with teens with disabilities through sports programs. His school involvement includes JSU at McDaniel High School and volunteering at Portland’s annual Foot Traffic marathon.
Ben is a four-sport varsity athlete and member of the soccer, basketball, tennis, and cross-country teams at Catlin Gabel School. He serves as captain of the tennis team and was a 2022 State Team Tennis Champion, 2021 District Tennis Finalist, 2021 All-District Tennis Team member, and a 2021 State Soccer Champion. He also competed in the 2019 JCC Maccabi USA Games as a member of Oregon’s MJCC Soccer team. Ben’s community service includes serving as the current president of the CommuniCare Club, a member of the Leadership Council at the Oregon Jewish Community Youth Foundation, a high school intern with StandWithUs, a leader of Catlin’s Jewish Student Union, and a Community Engineering Manager for Catlin’s robotics team. He is student body President, a member of Catlin’s Student Ambassador Program, and works as a math, computer science and science tutor. Ben will attend Stanford University in the fall, intending to study data science and education.
Lily has been a member of Catlin Gabel’s varsity tennis team since her sophomore year of high school and was named team captain in her junior and senior years on the team. Lily was a 2022 4A Team State Champion, 2022 4A All-District Champion, and she placed 3rd in the 2021 4A All District. Lily was also a three-year member of Catlin Gabel’s varsity volleyball team, which was ranked 3rd in the 2021 Oregon 3A division, and she was a starting forward on the varsity basketball team. Lily volunteered time working with Socks + Sandwiches and Breaking the Barrier, two organizations working to provide support and supplies for the local houseless population within the Portland community. At Catlin, she is involved in a number of clubs and programs including: a leader of the Jewish Student Union, Model United Nations leader, Science Kinesiology Teaching Assistant, a leader of the Jewish Affinity Group, member of the Catlin Gabel Ambassador Program and the Feminism Club, and editorial contributor for the student newspaper, CatlinSpeak.
Lyla Paru has been an all-star cheerleader at Oregon Dream Teams since her freshman year of high school. Her team placed third in the nation in 2019 and second in the nation in 2021. Lyla was also a member of Beaverton High School’s (BHS) varsity sideline and competitive cheer teams, and, in 2020, she was the first cheerleader from BHS to be named to the All-State team. Lyla volunteered her time at the beginning of the pandemic to assist over 200 senior citizens in the metro area helping them obtain COVID vaccine appointments. She is an active volunteer with Guide Dogs for the Blind and Potluck in the Park. Lyla works as both a lifeguard and youth gymnastics coach. She was a LINK crew member at BHS, mentoring incoming freshmen during her junior and senior year. She completed a rigorous course load at BHS including five AP courses and six dual-credit college courses through the BHS marketing pathway program and PCC. Lyla plans to attend University of Oregon and major in advertising and business.
Everest Sibony is a four-year basketball letterman and two-year basketball captain at Seaside High School. He was the 2020-2021 Unanimous League Most Valuable Player, and his team won the league championship three out of four years. He was a three-year soccer letterman and two-year state champion. He was also a two-year golf letterman and league champion in golf. His community service includes work with the Shape Up Across Oregon Exercise Program, the Tobacco/Alcohol/Drug Prevention Program, and he was also an Elks Hoops Shoot Regional Finalist. He is an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts. Everest was selected as valedictorian and has a 4.0 GPA. He is student body President, and won the social studies Award of Excellence. He will attend the University of Portland and play on the basketball team.
Edward “Eddie” Herzig, (Eddie) is truly a well-rounded community member. Academically, Eddie is a Riverdale High School senior, he’s in the National Honor Society, and has accumulated over 15 honors credits meaning that he has gone above and beyond in those classes by completing additional assignments and maintained exceptional academic standing in those classes throughout the entirety of his Riverdale career. He has also served as the President of the Student Union from both junior and senior years and on the Principal’s Advisory Committee.
Athletically, Eddie’s sport of choice is sailing. He was a four year member of the Riverdale High School sailing team on which he has continuously placed highly in both the 420 Class, the CFJ class, and the Laser class and won the Oregon Cup in both 2019 and 2020. He shares his passion as a Sailing Coach and Instructor and has worked with the Oregon Youth Sailing Foundation on the Community Sailing Program, which is designed to provide a sailing experience to underprivileged youth.
He is an Eagle Scout, and a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eddie started a service to deliver groceries and essentials to
at-risk individuals in the community. He made countless deliveries to the elderly, immuno-compromised, and healthcare workers from the onset of the pandemic until January, 2021. He switched his focus in January to volunteer at OHSU’s mass vaccination site at the PDX Economy Parking Lot. He has served in nearly every role, from helping vaccinate to registration and even working as the site lead. Eddie has volunteered hundreds of hours at the site nearly every weekend, and will continue to work there until the mission of the site is done.
Benjamin Olshin has maintained a GPA above 4.0. He was selected by Catlin Gabel to speak on student panels as well as meet with and assess potential faculty hires. He has engaged in community service in three main categories: Jewish service, photography/filmmaking, and Babies With Books (BWB).
For BWB, he was selected by Catlin Gabel to serve on the Community Engagement Leadership Team.
For the past 3 years, he has served as the leader of social action work for Congregation Beth Israel’s youth group. He has developed and hosted antisemitism workshops and organized garden and construction projects.
For the past two years, he was a member of the J-Serve PDX leadership committee.
Since 2017, he has dedicated more than 1,500 hours to creating and implementing NICU reading programs through Babies With Books (BWB), the early literacy organization he founded and leads. Hospitalized infants miss critical language exposure and 25% of NICU parents develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorders related to their infant’s hospitalization. BWB’s programs work to address these issues by providing books in seven languages and early literacy education to families to support infant neurodevelopment, foster family bonding, and reduce hospital trauma. Benjamin was invited to present his Babies With Books work at an international medical conference and the Vermont Oxford Network Neonatology Annual Quality Congress.
For seven years, he was a competitive gymnast, practicing 20+ hours per week at the MAC club. He was awarded the 2018 Gymnast of The Year award for his leadership and spirit. He transitioned to running cross country and track and field during his junior year and became a cross country co-captain his senior year. He enjoys playing basketball, ultimate frisbee, tennis, snowboarding, and skiing. In college, he intends to study medical anthropology and global health to understand and address sociocultural health disparities to improve community well-being.
Mia Kane attends Lincoln High School and is a member of the National Honor Roll, the Commissioner of Communications, Sources of Strength Leader, SAFER Consent teacher, and Healthy Relations Advocate/Speaker (SARC Certified). She is the Number One runner for Lincoln’s Cross Country Varsity and competed this year in Nike NXN Cross Country Nationals. Lincoln was the first Portland Interscholastic League team ever to qualify. Last year, she placed 8th in State for the 3000m and 9th in State for 1500m. Mia has been on the All-League and All-State list for three consecutive years. She has been the captain of the United PDX club soccer team for many years. Outside of school and athletics, Mia volunteers with Oregon Food Bank and was previously the President of GIVE (Get Involved, Value Everyone). She currently serves as the Chairperson/President of Anti-bullying at Lincoln and teaches Consent/Safe sex lectures to high school students. She is also a certified suicide prevention (Sources of Strength) advocate and leader.
Sophie Wand is a member of the Catlin Gabel Athletic Leadership Council and participated in the Oregon Girls Sports Leadership Summit. In 2018 and 2019, she was Oregon’s 3A State Player of the Year and was Oregon’s 3A All State 1st Team in soccer with Catlin Gabel. Sophie also participated on the Maccabi USA U-18 National Team at the 2019 Pan American Maccabi Games and was a Gold Medalist. Throughout 2014-2018, Sophie practiced at the US Soccer Training Center and, in 2016-2017, was the Olympic Development Program State Team Captain. She is a volunteer Ambassador for KairosPDX Charter School, is a leader at Healing Hands (organizes blood drives at Catlin Gabel), helps to distribute socks and sandwiches to homeless people in the Portland area through Socks and Sandwiches, and also volunteers her time at PERIOD to distribute feminine hygiene products to organizations helping homeless women.
Sophie is a senior at Catlin Gabel High School and has maintained a 4.0 GPA all four years. During her freshman year, Sophie received the Catlin Gabel Palma Scholarship which is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in academics, sports, leadership, and service. During her senior year, she embarked on a year-long research project exploring the sexual harassment culture among high school students to raise awareness and educate others.
During junior and senior years, she was the Girls Basketball Varsity Captain, High School 2nd Team All-League in 2015 and 2016; High School Team Leading Scorer in 2015, 2016, and 2017; High School Team Leading Assists in 2015, 2016, and 2017; Catlin Gabel Most Valuable Player of the Year in 2016; High School Westside Christian Tournament Champions in 2017; Memorial Weekend Tournament Champions in 2017; Portland Tribune Athlete of the Week in December 2017; Catlin Gabel Most Improved Player of the Year in 2017, and US National Maccabi Games Participant 2016 in Girls Soccer. For the past four years, she has led the American Red Cross blood drives at Catlin Gabel and was awarded the American Red Cross High School Scholarship. She has also been involved with service work in our criminal justice system. Specifically, she organized a book drive for a reading group within a local prison, collecting over 350 donated books. Then, she began a pen pal exchange program between Catlin Gabel high school students and prisoners within this reading group. Finally, she has volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club in Northeast Portland, leading a variety of sports clinics.
Jack recently moved from Alaska and is a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School. He has been on the honor roll every semester and was a member of the National Honor Society, Highly Gifted Program at West Anchorage High School, and has a seal of bi-literacy in French. When Jack moved to Portland, he joined the Portland Timbers Academy U17 and U19. Among his athletic accomplishments, Jack has excelled in programs such as Maccabiah, where in 2017 he was a Gold Medalist in Junior Boys Soccer (team captain for USA), the 2016 Arctic Winter Games Futsal Silver Medalist in Nuuk, Greenland. Jack is also a NCSY member, President of JSU at Wilson High during his junior and senior years, Jewish Federation of Portland Super Sunday Volunteer, and was the JPDX (Jewish girls team) soccer coach.
Laz is a senior at Lake Oswego High School where he is a three-sport athlete. Upon graduation, he will have accumulated 10 varsity letters for football, alpine skiing and baseball. In addition to a hectic sports schedule, Laz is an accomplished jazz pianist and excellent student. Currently, Laz is ranked as the #1 slalom racer in the Three Rivers League. Growing up in Bend, Laz played soccer, ice hockey, tennis, and golf, and achieved a green belt in Karate. Academically, Glickman is a member of National Honor Society. As a jazz pianist, Laz participates in an ensemble at the Alan Jones Academy of Music, is in the Lake Oswego High School jazz band, and is a member of Innovation Project.
Laz has served the Jewish community during the past few years by playing piano for the residents at the Rose Schnitzer Manor. A lifelong Ducks fan, he will enter the University of Oregon in the Fall, where he plans to double major in business (finance) and music. Laz’s grandfather is Harry Glickman, the founder and President Emeritus of the Portland Trail Blazers, and the namesake of the Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Award.
Layton Rosenfeld is a junior at the Catlin Gabel School where she is class president. She plays center defense and is team captain for the Portland Thorns Soccer Academy. Layton has also participated at the state and western US levels of the Olympic Developmental Program. She also enjoys playing tennis, basketball, table tennis, and skiing. Layton is president of Catlin’s InvenTeam engineering club, participates in Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering and Math (AWSEM), and organizes a service program supporting teenage refugees from Central and South America in Portland.
She has been a part of the Oregon Jewish Community Youth Foundation for three years, and is the OJCYF representative in the National Jewish Teen Funders Network. Layton has the honor of playing Kol Nidre on violin at the family service at Congregation Beth Israel. Layton intends to study biology and the natural sciences and pursue a career in research and teaching.

Jacob is a senior at Catlin Gabel School where he was awarded the Palma Scholarship Award, an award for students demonstrating excellence in academics, athletics, service, and leadership in the Catlin Gabel Community. He is on the Boys Varsity Basketball team and was 1st Team All-League in his junior year as well as honorable mention. Jacob will be a starter and team captain heading into his senior season. In addition to basketball, he also starts on the Boys Varsity Soccer team. Jacob was the founder of two clubs at Catlin Gabel. One is the Kids Club, which partners with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Portland to run basketball and soccer clinics for aspiring young athletes. He also founded the After School Program which provides academic and athletic coaching for kids in grades 1-5 at the elementary school level.
Claire is a senior at Catlin Gabel School where she is a National Merit Commended Scholar. She interned at OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute’s Druker Lab this past summer while studying Acute Myeloid Leukemia, and published an American Society of Hematology abstract. She also participated in the Young Entrepreneurs Business Week summer camp, and, during the entrepreneurship week, received the student of the week award. Claire plays on the Girls Varsity Soccer team at Catlin Gabel and has been a team captain the last two seasons. She is also a member of the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team and was elected team captain in her senior year. She has also been involved in the Oregon Jewish Community Youth Foundation for four years. Claire serves on the executive team for Camions of Care as chapter coordinator and also volunteers for the Special Olympics. Recently she was selected to travel to Israel for the 2017 Maccabiah Games with the USA’s Girls Lacrosse Team. Claire is excited to represent her country, play a sport she loves, and be able to travel to Israel for the first time.
Sydney Kobak is a senior at Lincoln High School where she was accepted into the National Honor Society and serves as Student Representative as a result of strong academics and her exceptional leadership qualities. She is on the girls varsity soccer team and this year, was named captain. Upon conclusion of the season, she was voted, “Most Valuable Player” and named “Portland Interscholastic League First Team All League Player.” She was named “Athlete of the Week” and featured on KOIN TV. She has also lettered in track and field, and runs Varsity Track in the 400 and 800 races. For fun, she skis and especially enjoys climbing to the summit of our local mountains and then skiing down.
David Menashe is a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School where he is on the National Honor Roll and the National Honor Society. He is in the soccer program at Wilson and has been a Varsity Letterman for three years and is the captain of his team. He has been a part of the tennis team for four years, and currently ranks as the number one doubles team. He is an active member of Sol Stern AZA BBYO chapter’s Board. He was an Oded at Camp Solomon Schechter and earned 120 hours of community service as a volunteer. He has volunteered in many capacities around the community including at sports camps, hunger initiatives and at Alta Planning+Design.
Benjamin Barna is a senior at Lakeridge High School where he has been on the National Honor Roll every semester as well as the National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society for his junior and senior years. He was selected to be one of twelve Academic All-Stars at LHS. Ben is a four-year member of the boys’ varsity soccer team for which he is presently Captain. He has received second team all-league honors in the Three Rivers League junior and senior year for soccer, and participated in club soccer for over ten years. He served as Junior Class President, and is currently serving as Student Body President. When he’s not busy with those responsibilities, Ben peer tutors at his school, helps organize school beautification days, and participates in Challenger’s Organization which helps kids with special needs play sports. Ben is a proud graduate of Portland Jewish Academy.
Johanna is currently a senior at Grant High School, where she has been on the Honor Roll since her freshman year. In addition, she is part of the National Honor Society which recognizes students who excel academically as well as show commitment to their community. She is a long-time member of OMEGA Gymnastics club and has been team captain all four years of high school; she practices twenty hours a week and competes at state, regional and western national levels. Johanna is President of Oregon’s only high school UNICEF Club, member of Octagon Club at her school, dedicated volunteer at Meals on Wheels, and a volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank. She also enjoys hiking, bouldering, taking dance classes and wants to learn to surf.
A Junior at Catlin Gabel, Brendan Edelson carries a 3.92 GPA and is the co-captain of the varsity golf team. He recently placed 2nd in the Amateur Division (24 years and younger) at the SpeedGolf World Championship, and 5th overall in the Amateur Division. In 2013, he was the Oregon Golf Association Diamond Woods Junior Overall Champion. In addition, he earned First Team All-State and all OSAA Special District 1. He played JV soccer as a Freshman and Sophomore. Academically, Brendan has served as an intern for the OHSU Department of Neurology and placed in the top 1% of the American Mathematics Competition. He is involved in the community as an Oregon Jewish Community Youth Foundation member, and volunteers for Tuition on the Track Walkathon, Meals on Wheels and the First Tee.
A Senior at Lakeridge High School, Shea maintains a 3.79 GPA while participating in soccer, tennis and basketball. She served as the captain of the JV Soccer team in 2012, Captain of the Varsity Girls Tennis team and a member of the Varsity Basketball team. Previously she also served as captain of the JV Basketball team. Academically, Shea has been on the honor-roll throughout high school, and has completed nine AP classes. In the community, she was President of Portland B’nai B’rith Youth Organization and currently serves on the Regional Community Service board for the Northwest. Shea has volunteered for several charities, including The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Providence Center for Medically Fragile Children, Down Syndrome Network Oregon and Special Olympics Oregon. This coming summer, Shea will help coordinate Impact Boston 2014, which is a Jewish community, service-based, summer experience.
Isaiah is a four-sport standout at Riverdale High School where he has played soccer, basketball, track and tennis. Isaiah, a senior, was a member of the soccer state championship team and was the 2012 Soccer Player of the Year at Riverdale. As a hoopster, Isaiah was the JV Most Valuable Player in 2011 before playing Varsity his senior year. He competed on the track team his senior year and had first place finishes in the 400, 800 and 4x400 relay. He also played tennis his junior year and won 2nd place in a district competition. Off the field, Isaiah maintained a 4.0 GPA and was a National Honor Society inductee his junior and senior years. He volunteers for the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation, Riverdale Green Club and the Oregon Zoo.
Naomi is a nationally ranked rock climber on The Circuit Bouldering Team. She ranked 7th in the United States at the Youth National Championship in 2012 and placed 2nd at the Regional Championship in 2011 and 2012. Academically, Naomi also shines with her 3.72 GPA at Wilson High School and she volunteers for The Children’s Trust Fund of Oregon. As a senior she also received credit for completing AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics; and she is the copy-editor of the Wilson High school yearbook.
